flight: Alberta’s Early Learning and Care Framework

An early learning and child care curriculum framework is different than a traditional curriculum

The curriculum is focused on holistic goals rather than specific outcomes for each subject area.

Makovichuk, L., Hewes, J., Lirette, P., & Thomas, N. (2014). Flight: Alberta’s early learning and care framework. Retrieved from flightframework.ca

The curriculum framework will inspire, provoke, and guide educators in their work with children and their families - a framework of possibilities

  • for nurturing each child’s identity as a mighty learner and citizen

  • for valuing play in the lives of young children

  • for making children’s play, learning, and development visible for children, families, and educators

  • for respecting family, social, and cultural practices and traditions in local communities

  • for reflecting on the everyday experiences of children that are the basis of curriculum meaning making in early childhood communities

The vision is for Flight to be a living document and that educators will use it to question, discuss, and reflect on curriculum meaning making

The Curriculum Framework has 5 Core Concepts:

  • The image of the Child: A Mighty Learner and Citizen

  • A Practice of Relationships: Your Role as an Early Learning and Child Care Educator

  • Mighty Learners: Nurturing Children’s Dispositions to Learn

  • Responsive Environments: Time, Space, Material, and Participation

  • Transitions and Continuities: Supporting Children and Families Through Change

The 4 Holistic Play-based Goals:

  • Well-Being

  • Play and Playfulness

  • Communication and Literacies

  • Diversity and Social Responsibility

5 Childrens Dispositions to Learn:

  • Playing and Playful

  • Seeking

  • Participating

  • Persisting

  • Caring

Educators Roles as:

  • Co-Learner

  • Co-Researcher

  • Co-imaginers of Possibilities

Parent Testimonials

“My boy loves it here! He was part of this family for just over 3 years. Good caring staff and an awesome cook as well.”

— Amber

This is our 19 month old daughters first daycare, she has been attending the center for 5 months. Staff are great, and she absolutely loves going . We love that she spends so much time outside. Meals and snacks are healthy. We notice a difference in her mannerisms ; such as sitting when eating or sitting to put on her shoes. She is a much happier girl all around; the center has given her a positive outlet to become social and independent. We would definitely recommend TCCC.

  • Naomi

I can remember going to the Centre when I was a child & have now had the pleasure of having both of my boys at the center. Due to a large age gap between my children we have been able to be at the Centre since 2009. I can not express the amount of gratitude we have for the teachers. The love and support they have shown to my boys is absolutely amazing. Such a wonderful group of people who have become like our second family. Cheers to another 40 years ladies, you are doing an incredible job looking after our littles.

-Jeanette

“Wonderful staff who are wholeheartedly committed to teaching and loving all of the children!”

— Amanda Joy

We are so happy that we chose Taber Child Care Centre Society. Our little girl love being there and interacting with the children and staff. We appreciate the yummy healthy food which is offered to her that allows her to eat foods that she might not get from us. My husband and i love the fact we get picture updates about her daily activities that allow us to stay connected with her. Additionally it is so nice that they have their own outdoor space where the kids can play in a safe well kept area. I definitely have and will continue to recommend them to anyone needing child care.

-Crystal

My children have been attending the Taber Child Care Centre for over a year now. I have been consistently impressed with the professionalism and skill of the staff. My kids are happy to arrive at daycare and still have smiles when I pick them up. The staff seem genuinely happy which I believe is a sign of a well-run organization. I love the developmental crafts, activities, and programming, as well as the spacious outdoor play area. I also really appreciate the healthy, home-cooked meals on site. I would absolutely recommend this daycare to anyone!"

Thanks so much, it has been a great year!

-Kelly
